Renewable Energy in Indonesia: How Big is the Potential?

Introduction

Indonesia as a tropical and archipelagic country has an abundance of natural resources that can be utilized as alternative energy. Renewable energy is an ideal solution in reducing dependence on fossil energy that is not environmentally friendly. Through academic and technological approaches, Telkom University’s Energy Systems Engineering undergraduate study program is at the forefront of developing Indonesia’s renewable energy potential.

Renewable Energy Potential in Indonesia

Indonesia has a total renewable energy potential of around 7,879.4 GW (scenario 1) or 6,811.3 GW (scenario 2).

Types and Potential of Renewable Energy:

  • Solar
    Potential: 207,8 GWp
    Main location: Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi
  • Wind
    Potential: 60,6 GW
    Main location: South Sulawesi (Sidrap & Jeneponto), NTT
  • Hydropower
    Potential: 94,5 GW
    Main location: Sumatra, Kalimantan, Papua
  • Geothermal
    Potential: 29,5 GW
    Main location: West Java, South Sulawesi, Sulawesi
  • Biomassa, Biogas
    Potential: 32,6 GW
    Source: agricultural waste, organic waste

Renewable Energy Potential Distribution Map

In October 2021, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) released a study titled “Beyond 443 GW: Indonesia’s Infinite Renewable Energy Potentials”. This study technically maps the potential of renewable energy in Indonesia using Geographic Information Systems.

The IESR study is expected to serve as a guide for the government and policy makers in planning and allocating resources for EBT utilization. In addition, IESR hopes that this study will also help local governments in utilizing EBT potential in their regions.

According to the study, the total potential of renewable energy in Indonesia is huge, reaching 7,879.4 GW (scenario 1) or 6,811.3 GW (scenario 2), which includes:

  • Solar Power Plants (PLTS): 7,714.6 GW (scenario 1) and 6,749.3 GW (scenario 2)
  • Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHP): 28.1 GW (scenario 1) and 6.3 GW (scenario 2)
  • Wind farms: 19.8 to 106 GW
  • Biomass power plants: 30.73 GW
