What is Hydropower? Definition and How it Works

Introduction

In the era of global energy transition, hydropower is one of the main solutions in providing clean and sustainable energy. Indonesia, with its rich water resources, has great potential in the development of hydropower. Telkom University’s Energy Systems Engineering undergraduate study program plays an important role in producing competent experts in this field.

What is Hydropower?

Hydropower is a technology that utilizes the kinetic and potential energy of flowing water to generate electricity. The process involves the conversion of water energy into mechanical energy through a turbine, which is then converted into electrical energy by a generator.

Jenis-Jenis Hydropower

  • Reservoir :Store large amounts of water for use during peak demand.
  • Run-of-River: Rely on the natural flow of the river without large storage.
  • Pumped Storage: Stores energy by pumping water up when demand is low and releasing it when demand is high.

How Hydroelectric Power Works

The hydropower process involves several stages:

  • Water Storage: Water is collected in reservoirs or drained directly from rivers.
  • Flow to Turbine: Water is conveyed through a penstock to the turbine.
  • Turbine Movement: The flow of water rotates the turbine, converting potential energy into mechanical energy.
  • Electricity Generation: A rotating turbine drives a generator to produce electricity.

Hydropower Potential in Indonesia

Indonesia has about 75 GW of hydropower potential, but only about 6.6 GW has been utilized. Large projects such as the Kayan Hydropower Plant in North Kalimantan with a capacity of 9,000 MW demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment to developing renewable energy.

By understanding the concept and workings of hydropower, as well as the great potential that Indonesia has, we can contribute to creating a sustainable energy future.
